South Indian Monkey Trap

THE SOUTH INDIAN MONKEY TRAP

Best described by Robert M. Pirsig in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance...

“… old South Indian Monkey Trap, which depends on value rigidity for its effectiveness. The trap consists of a hollowed-out coconut chained to a stake. The coconut has some rice inside which can be grabbed through a small hole. The hole is big enough so that the monkey's hand can go in, but too small for his fist with rice in it to come out. The monkey reaches in and is suddenly trapped by nothing more than his own value rigidity. He can't revalue the rice. He cannot see that freedom without rice is more valuable than capture with it.

The villagers are coming to get him and take him away. They're coming closer-closer! - now! What general advice - not specific advice, but what general advice would you give the poor monkey in circumstances like this?“⁣

It might be easy to read this and think "what a foolish monkey" but how often do we hold on to things that no longer serve us and keep us trapped for not letting go?  Is there anything in your life you should have let go of long ago?

Working with an accountability coach can be a game-changer in breaking free from the things that are holding you back. Much like the monkey trapped by its inability to let go of the rice, many of us find ourselves stuck in patterns of behavior, mindsets, or habits that no longer serve us. An accountability coach helps you identify these limiting factors and guides you in developing the awareness needed to release them.

Through a structured and supportive approach, an accountability coach works with you to uncover the root causes of your obstacles. They provide a fresh perspective, helping you see your situation with new clarity. This can illuminate blind spots and reveal underlying issues that you may not have been aware of.

Additionally, an accountability coach provides practical tools and strategies to help you overcome these barriers. They assist in setting realistic, achievable goals and creating a plan to reach them. By holding you accountable to your commitments, they ensure you stay on track and don’t revert to old habits. Moreover, they offer ongoing support and motivation, which is crucial during challenging times. They celebrate your progress, helping you build confidence and momentum. This continuous encouragement makes it easier to let go of what’s holding you back and embrace new, empowering behaviors.

If you’re ready to move past the things that have been holding you back, book a free intro session with us now.
